Hinoki Village

During Japanese occupation period, the Japanese government was actively developing Taiwan’s forest resources, bringing up the prosperous forestry development! Alishan,Basianshan, and Taipingshan were “Taiwan’s top three forests” in which Alishan was the first and the biggest one.

In 1912, Alishan Forest Railway started operation, opening the logging era of Alishan. Two years later, Forestry Bureau started building dormitories for the staff; the next year, as the scale of Cypress Forest Village expanded that the club, single dormitories, family dormitories, official houses, and bathhouses were completed. In 2005, Chiayi City Government registered the 28 buildings of “Ben Cun” as the historical buildings in order to preserve the forestry cultural asset. In 2009, Executive Yuan approved。

Song of the Forest

The installation "Song of the Forest" is located at the intersection of Wenhua Road and the TRA Main Line in Chiayi City. The tower symbolizes the sacred tree, the tunnel, and the track of Alishan Forest Railway to show the transition of light and the magnificence of Alishan. Its design is also inspired by the craftsmanship of aboriginal tribes. The materials of the installation take advantage of woods, tracks, and stoned provided by the Forestry Bureau to imitate a natural environment. You can feel the light, the night, and the aura of the forest in the exact tower. It is as fascinating as in Alishan itself.

The sculptor of this installation, Wang Wen-Chih, was born in the Alishan area. He refers to his hometown and his skills to create this modern installation. This work aims to represent the prosperity of Chiayi as a wood capital and create a distinct image of Alishan Forestry Park to welcome all the visitors from the island and all over the world.

Chiayi Sawmill

Built in 1914 (the 3rd year of the Taisho era), this was the largest wood mill in terms of surface area run by the government during the period of Japanese rule.

This mill was responsible for cutting trees on Alishan and processing them into “wood”, and was known in that year as the number one producer by production scale in the East.

KANO Park

Chiayi City KANO Park finished in August, 2017 evidences the proud baseball days of Chiayi City.

The stone plate on the ground writes the lines in KANO the film like “The desperate papaya tree is eventually fruitful” and “Practice is the only way to fine baseball performance”.

The baseball Century Avenue 40 meters wide and 180 meters long used to be the must path for the KANO baseball team to the field. The stone plate on the ground and the baseball stars wall aside skillfully present the history of the KANO baseball team introducing 16 members in the second place of Koshi’en the National High School Baseball Championship of Japan in that year. The KANO Ball with the weight of 4 tons and the diameter of 5 meters is inevitable. The Ball is made of aluminum alloy with over 120 hollow-out rings embedded.

City Center Fountain

The rainbow-colored Central Fountain was built in 1970 under the administration of former City Magistrate Dr. Xu Shi-Xian (許世賢). In the center of the fountain is a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, and the water dance is programmed with 14 shows. The water show runs in a cycle every 15 minutes, and the highest water beam shoots as high as 20 meters. At night, neon lights accompany the dancing water to bring the city dazzling shows everyday.
